Why I have this Passion

Early in my career, I was a technician working for Law Engineering and Testing Company (LAW) and the management brought in a marketing professional as a consultant to the organization. This was in the early 1980’s and marketing was a new concept to engineering firms. The idea was to take a select group of technical people and teach business development techniques to them. The Leadership Network Program objective was to grow the future leaders of the company.

I was included in this first program and I was intrigued. I remember the first reading assignment, How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. This encyclopedia on people skills has been the cornerstone of my successful thirty-five year career in outside sales. LAW did not recognize the increased market value of their trained personnel and ended up creating leaders of numerous other organizations, including a past City of Houston Public Works Director.

Sales became my passion and much of my success is attributed to my “pushing the spec”. I conducted hundreds of technical presentations at engineering lunch & learns, city council meetings, board of director meetings, and technical conferences. I developed a love for sharing my knowledge and experiences through seminars and talks.
